Classification of music genre is very individual specific. Well you could use the billboard or some major magazines/stations as the definition?

Alternatives varies, They are usually Rock, mixed with other genres like blues or folks and even Rapping. Linkin park, Staind or Gomez are usually classified as Alternative. Smashing Pumpkins are during one time, classified as Alternative too. Emo is classified as a type of harder punk. The Used, Funeral for a Friend, Taking back sunday or Matchbook romance are usually classified under Emo rock.
Indie rock stands for Independent Rock, which actually deprive from Independent Bands. Their music style are usually rejected from the mainstream in the past. Bands like Nirvana (Grunge) Franz Ferdinand or The Pixies. Indie bands in the past are pop/rock bands transformation.
Progressive rock are usually called Progressive Metal, for they are known for their heavy but unique sound. A distinct way of telling Progressive Rock from other genres are the slow start of the music changing to real heavy. Bands like Sonata Arctica or Stratovarius. Progressive are usually not popular in the U.S.A or U.K. Most of Progressive Rock bands comes from Finland, Germany or countries as such.
Soft Rock, as the name suggest are softer rock. Usually compared to Alternative Rock, they uses Rock 'N Roll style much more. Soft Rock usually have piano as a main instrument. Bands like Coldplay (usually debated as Alternative) or Keane are grouped as Soft Rock. The thing about Soft Rock is that, pop singers usually sing Soft Rock as part of their music too, so finding pure Soft Rock bands ain't easy.

I am no musician at all. I am just a closet metal and rock fans. If I got money I will use my money buy their album as a way to support their music. But first their music gotta touch and mesmerize me first.
Metallica And Justice For All album is what get me interested in the metal arena. Wonder a chinese version of metallica will surface at SuperBands?

can play guitar n bass. i guess know how to play guitar = know how to play bass. not really good in it though. Attended lesson and left the course halfway through. go through same old things. So learning at ultimate-guitar.com

Oh no wonder. I am only 18 this year and what actually got me into older rock scene is actually the band "The Offspring" alright they are 90's band but their style is the 80's so i tried download judas priest music and found them nice. JUDAS RISING
