I was browsing through the newspapers when I came across a familiar face in the obitiuaries.
His name is Paul Tan Kay Oei...
Paul was my section commander during my BMT days. He came across to me as "Mr Nice Guy." Indeed,he was the nicest sergeant I had during BMT.He was so unlike the other instructors who ranted at us whenever we spoke to them-he talked to us in a calm and friendly manner-no vulgarities at all.He treated us as entities of flesh and blood with emotions unlike others who liked to dehumanize and belittle us.Even when our section did something wrong,he would never really raise his voice at us.He would "knock us down",and then made us "hold it there" while explaining our mistakes clearly and slowly.I don't recall him ever making us do pushups after that because he would "recover" us after his delineation of our mistakes.
I went into PTP as a "zero fighter" who could not even do a single partial range of motion chin up.Under his patient guidance and motivation,I gradually managed to break the "zero barrier." I would never forget the times when you helped me do assisted chin ups without shouting stuff such as "you fu-cking gu niang, you weak loser" which most of the instructors did.At the end of PTP,I was knocking out 10-12 chins ups easily. For that,I have to thank you,Paul.
After BMT,we did not see each other until I went to NUS 2 years later. We did not have a chance to talk much in university and soon both of us graduated. He became forgotten as time passed by...until sadly I saw his picture in the papers today.
Paul, you have gone to a better place.
Though you are only one year older than me,I would to address you as Sergeant Paul one last time and say things I should have said 7 years ago.
Sergeant Paul, thanks for your guidance and helping to shape a small but significant portion of my life...
