just to make sure, hope you are not using a graphics card that requires 128mb of shared memory (quite uncommon, 64mb more common). windows will only display (via control panel > system or my computer > properties) the amount of RAM made available to the system, excluding any such RAM which may have been allocated to other such shared resources.Originally posted by crescent:I just took over a old com and the motherboard has 3 ram slots. All 3 slots are filled with 128MB Sdram. Yet when i checked my system in windows, it indicate that i only have 256Mb ram??? Why ah? Can any experts help me? Thought 128mb*3=384MB?
Is it the computer can only display ram value in quantities of 64mb, 128mb, 256mb and 1gb? How much ram is my computer running actually?
First reason: The maximum RAM could be 256MB. So, even if put 1GB, it will still show 256MB. That is due to the configurations of the motherboard, you can't change that.Originally posted by crescent:I just took over a old com and the motherboard has 3 ram slots. actually with 3 slots and 256Mb limit is a bit out-of-this-world (64+64+128?), maybe we're talking about a really old skool mobo here.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:First reason: The maximum RAM could be 256MB. Second reason: If the video card is integrated together with the motherboard, it will show lesser RAM. That's why 384MB - 128MB = 256MB.
He says old, so I thinking maybe lor.Originally posted by ^tamago^:actually with 3 slots and 256Mb limit is a bit out-of-this-world (64+64+128?), maybe we're talking about a really old skool mobo here.

Now that you've mentioned it, it MAY BE possible. If the motherboard is made more than 5 years back for a P2, it may be due to the maximum supported RAM.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:First reason: The maximum RAM could be 256MB.
