Who says I'm a millionaire?
NEW YORK - Who wants to be a millionaire? Not Donald Trump, a self-professed billionaire.
The real estate mogul and reality TV star said on Tuesday that he had filed a lawsuit against author Timothy O'Brien for pegging his net worth at no more than US$250 million (S$405.3 million).
Trump, who is known for his reality show The Apprentice, sued O'Brien and his publisher, Warner Books, for defamatory statements in the book, TrumpNation: The Art Of Being The Donald.
At issue is Trump's net worth, which O'Brien reported was US$150 million to US$250 million, citing three people with direct knowledge of his finances.
Trump contends that his net worth is at least US$2.7 billion. He said the suit seeks US$5 billion in compensatory and punitive damages from Warner and O'Brien, a New York Times reporter who covered Trump's businesses for more than a decade.
'I believe it is important to expose irresponsible, malicious and false reporting,' Trump said in a statement.
A Warner Books spokesman said Trump had participated extensively and willingly in O'Brien's research for the book and the author was willing to meet Trump at any time to discuss its merits.
