DonÂ’t just preach
cleanliness, enforce it
Letter from THIAN CHEN SAN
IN OCTOBER last year, I contacted the
Hong Kah Town Council to complain that
my upstairs neighbours have been throwing
cigarette butts, wrappers, cotton buds
etc onto the ledge of my air-conditioning unit
and living room.
I stressed to the Town Council that
the litter is an eyesore, not to mention a fire
hazard.
In the worst-case scenario, a lit cigarette
butt, together with the small litter, can be
sucked into my air-con compressor while it
is on, resulting in an explosion which could
cause damage to life and property.
The suggestion from the Town Council?
Buy fire insurance.
The Town Council also replied saying
that I am not the only one to suffer from this
problem, and they added that this littering
is partly due to the design of the ledges.
They had also consulted the National
Environment Agency, who in turn told me
they couldnÂ’t do anything other than educate
the residents.
Although the Town Council has sent
letters to all residents on the seriousness
of littering, what is the point of these reminders
when it cannot enforce them?
What a great help.
