"The Basic living"
The first generation of flats in sg to arrive in the 60s and 70s Bishan ,Toa Payoh and Tiong bahru. They had a rather' Dull, industrial" look or reddish appearance and had staircases at the sides of the block of the "open air" kind. Mainly consisting of 1 or 2 room flats..
Bishan New Town was only conceived in the late 70s and started developing in the 1980s.
Towns and fringe estates under the First 10 Years of Housing Programme include Queenstown, Bt Ho Swee, Telok Blangah (which later got named as Bt Merah), Toa Payoh, Whoapoa, Toa Payoh, Crawford St, Golden Mile Integrated Development, Selegie House, Cross St & Chinatown, Chin Swee, Zion Rd, Havelock, Tiong Bahru (areas north of Bt Ho Swee, around TIB MRT), Brickworks, Cantonment Rd, Tanjong Pagar, Duxton Plains, Siglap, Kg Arang, Dakota, and Bedok South.
Bishan was not in the consideration of plans as it was more than 5 miles away from the General Post Office, and they were waiting for the ongoing MRT debate to help them decide whether to proceed. Many estates were already conceived at this time.
Kallang Basin was still be reclaimed at this stage. The land of Marine Parade was alreay taking shape, and its first user is Bedok Camp at the end of the plot.
There is a book on the first 10-years of HDB at National Library, Level 11.
" Simple elegant living"
The 2nd generation of estates to appear around 1980 and contuining throughout the 80s. A major revamp compared to the previous generation They comprise of the major towns like AMK, Bedok, Hougang Had..Slightly more colour ,life and "cleaner look" The blocks were huge with many flats on one floor. Having in-out open windows and a separate storeroom. Some blocks also shaped in a rectangular u-shaped fashion. First time with improved lifts catering at intervals of 5,9,10 and 12 storeys. Facilities like playgrounds and parks also appeared
A 2nd batch of these flats arrived in the mid to late 80s with no sigficancant improvements..
Okay, but don't agree on no significant improvements part. Need more data.
" True high class living"
The 3rd generation estates which started from 1990 onwards. The best improvement in the evolution with a true high class standard of living. Elaborately colourful and full of life
Consisting of 4-5 room executive apartments For the first time the flats had sliding, sun screened windows and sunvisers. A balcony in some of higher priced flats and a common rubbish chute and enclosed electrical outlets and fire equiment in each corridor in some variations of the estates. Huge centralised rubbish collecting centres and multi storey carparks were invented
The 2nd kind called "masionette" with double storey houses similar to a bungalow first appeared during this time.
The 3rd kind, for the first time houses were made on the ground floor "the void deck" homes.
Lifts were found on every floor with LCD displays with a double closing door split in half. Huge Underground shelters were also found which were taken up in the form of shop residences
Units on the void deck level had existed in the 80s. One example is Potong Pasir New Town. One interesting fact is that the area used to be a sand quarry area, and hence the name Potong Pasir, which means "cut sand". The area where the HDB estate now stands used to hold 4 ponds linked to Kallang River. Residents moved out by 1970s, and the first blocks were ready in 1984.
"Post modern living"
A small group of estates came about in the mid to late 90s which were "extensions" resembling the 3rd generation. Often found alongside the 3rd generation estates. Surrealy but contrastingly coloured . Slightly improved architecture with "Simple but slightly sophicticated look" but with small landscaped gardens and slightly more improved LCD display in lifts with the addition of minor stoned pavement walkways and plastic playgrounds. No other significant improvements.
OK. More information, please.
" Millenium Living"
The last generation of estates in Punggol and Senkang around 2000 and the which resemble a "condo styled" of living. Each block at a distinctive colour Had elaborate lobbies, flats with an "open air balcony"
and huge landscaped gardens and sculptures showing the characteristic 'pilotis' effect on the column facade. and in some instances integrated swimming pools and tennis courts. Exibiting a "designer made" feel, Close proximity to Transport sources and shopping malls and entertainmaint centres alll within the estates.
Block Architectue resembles expensive "condos". For the first time blocks had a uniquey identifying names like ""The Sundial". For the sophisticated and high tech newer generation.
OK. More information, please. Never mention things like BTO and DBSS.
