roses and valentines day

this valentines day as like many before.. the prices of roses would be the most inflated... so ... why do we buy them?
Guys, why do we give flowers to our loved ones on v day? bec its expected and everyone else does so we do it too?
Gals, do you expect them? or bec when other gals get it you will be disappointed if you dun?
Is there a substitute to roses to express our love on v day so that retailers would not take advantage and keep hiking the prices?

i dun mind receiving other flowers like lilies or tulips...but no chrysanthemums or carnations pls.
u can grow them b4 hand then pluck for v-day. it is very sweet if someone does tat for the gal. -
