Does anyone know how to train a pet cat?

I have a 1 year old calico cat. When i call for it to come into the house it won't come unless i use a very stern voice and make a gesture for it to come in.
Also i think the cat is very naughty. When it sit on the sofa and i ask it to come down, sometimes it will listen but most of the time it will just meow meow and even scratch the sofa to "rebel" against me before running off to hide!
Im not asking for much because cat are not as trainable as dog. However is there any tips to make the cat come when calling it? Cause if it stay outside the house too long it may get lost (happen before). And if it sleep on the sofa someone may accidently sit on it. -

You can use a water spray to spray at it...
And if u spray at it when it sits on the sofa, spray a bit..
It should understand after a few times...

dogs can be trained to do things you want them to do.
cats... you just have to make compromise with them.
they were never meant to be trained. too proud and have a mind of their own...
