Dip. in IT?

Anyone can tell me whether this is a good course? I'm actually quite interested in computer stuffs... And thought of going into IT courses in Poly. But I heard from many people that IT courses are not good and they advise me not go there there. How true it that?
Another thing is although computer stuffs are interesting to me, I'm not sure if what they do, eg. programming, will be suitable for me since I have never done all these before.
So anyone can advise me whether I should still choose this course? I got 11 points for L1r4. Thanks! -
IT is broad...
you learn about operating system, databases, programming, system analysis, multimedia, applications, networking, etc etc.....
Of course you dont have to be a programmer after you graduate if you dont like it.
Go for the course if you like it, dont listen to what others are saying. -

if you're good, why would your future employer turn you away?
it would be worse if you choose a course you dont like and give up halfway right

My advice to u is tat, follow yur heart... if U really like computer stuffs and put yur heart in IT, den go for IT courses.. no point going for a course u dont like and regret when u are in tat course.. rite? 3 yrs in diploma course leh.. Dont listen to wad ppl say.. follow yur heart.. Do wad u really like.. All the best..

Read the different kinds, like programming, creating websites, animation, 3D-rendering, etc. Download the softwares and try them out if possible. If you are still interested after doing them, go for it. If you find you are interested in only specific IT fields after trying them, look out for the relevant polytechnics for the courses.
Networking is hot course in the IT field. So is IT Security and animation. -
But bear in mind there will also be more and more low-cost Chinese and Indian IT workers in the market. -

U wanna be safe? Get a job that deal with national security like mindef, MHA and other govt related agencies where some work just cannot be totally outsourced to foreign workers for obvious reasons -
well follow your heart...no point studying in a course that you have no interest in and further more there are too many cheap and good indian and china programmers. And now i'm still finding jobs after ord for almost 3 months!!!Kinda regret specialise in software engineering for my 3rd yr

Your result good enuff? Or your project module has good grades? Why not try DSTA cuz they are always looking for singaporeans to do mindef IT related work -
You are interested in computer stuff but you do not know what is programming or networking etc etc. Then if your passion runs deep may I suggest you pick up some books (Dummy guides are good as they explain stuff in layman terms) or some IT magazine to read up what are the technology trends etc etc and see which part of IT you want to focus?Originally posted by technoboy:Anyone can tell me whether this is a good course? Follow your interest is most important, because at the end of the day, interest is the thing that will help you to pull through your course and not the prospect of the course.
I took up e-commerce (From diploma to degree) courses last time (Believe me, I'm a big time fan of e-commerce)....I was able complete my 5 year part time course because it was the passion that pulled me through...well as for the prospect...sigh I cannot say e-commerce is not good, I can only say I didn't have such opportunity given to me to work on e-commecre related stuff...so do think over whether its a crush on this subject or a long term passion. -

I can confirm cuz I was formerly from there. DSTA do software development in-house but it seem in recent times they losing talents and outsourcing to those ST companies whereas DSTA do project management work. They are losing the developers to ST companies who poach from them.
IDA similar more on project management work supervising the vendors.
Gone are the days when you can do exciting new frontier software development in the command and control arena -

for god's sake.go look for the course advisors and have a talk with them,rather than here you are listening to others.make up your mind and stick to it.

Do you have very good grades for your final year Project modules and what did you do for the project? And your interest is very important. Do you like doing what you want to do? Even if you can get in based on your good academic results but if your job scope is mainly on software development due to customer needs then it is still a stressful job for you if you hate programming.
First and foremost, identify which area of IT are you interested in. Go read up Dummy ... books to get a overall view of each aspects of IT. Some ppl opt for database area, some on security, some on gaming and simulation, some on networking, some on software development etc etc.....
My advice is as a working developer and add on to ndmmxiaomayi posting. Course advisor will be good if they themselves have been in the IT line before and it is important to know which area are they specialising in during their tenure there. Sometimes their advice maybe skewed due to personal bias.
It is still possible to get IT jobs with minimal software development (assume you hate programming) like into database or systems analysis job scope.
