Model Scouts in Orchard

Some of my friends and I, while strolling about Orchard Road, have been approached by people who were claiming to be recruiting girls for their model agencies. We turned them down because we're from overseas, but one of my Singaporean friends told me that they're usually scammers who just want your money.
Another friend of mine was also asked if she was interested in appearing in a tv commercial in a MRT station.
Is this a common experience in Singapore? -

my buddy gt approached 6 times.
once she was brought to an office also.
but she's not so stupid to sign anything.
