I have a Brother Fax laser machine and its great (printer, fax, phone). Beats all the previous 4-cartridge rubbish printers I had. Lasted me years too.
Walk around Harvey Norman and you'll see many different models and prices (quite affordable for simple machines). The ink is the most expensive part of operation, so go for laser. You're also right to go for A4 fax (whatever you do, don't use those fax thermal paper type).
