Pdf files are good if you have things you want to publish (as in print) because you can store documents are very high resolution. Yes, it is compatible across platforms but that is no big deal nowadays.
Stick to word documents to avoid pissing off your potential employer. -

anyway what if the employer is using like word2000 and i use word2003 to type out the stuff? can open? -
actually a PDF format is more presentable. a word document can be edited. and it's awfully ugly when the boss opens a word document and find words underlined in red and green colours, be it your chinese name or address etc.
use word to type your resume if u are going to print a hard copy out for mailing. for e-mail resume use PDF or as what ditzy suggested save it as a jpeg, which i think is a very good idea as it is small in size and easy to open. -
One of my colleagues came to me the other day and asked me to help convert a cad drawing file into a pdf document so he could send it to a client via email. He told me its easier to see using pdf, but I helped him see what he needed to send and he required was a picture drawn out on cad. So i converted it into a jpeg image and solved his problem.

Oh anyway, if you need to convert your document to PDF you can either use:
1) Openoffice....as they have this convert to PDF feature (That was in version 1.x not version 2.x don't know have or not though, but its a good feature to lose)
2) Do a search on PDF creator (And not PDF 955) its a free open source software to help you convert your document files (Doc, xls, dwg etc etc) to PDF.
In any case you know the above information then kindly ignore my answer haha thanks. Just my five cents worth! -

I have this vendor who instead of faxing me the printed document, took the effort to scan it and convert it into pdf and then send to me via email. I was impressed with the amount of effort that took.

K, let me share what I learnt around.
I used to think PDFs are great. It creates an aura of professionalism for your resume... and also to show you put in lotsa efforts into its preparation.
However, feedback from some friends in HR shows otherwise. To them PDFs resumes give them lotsa inconveniences.
U see... you are not the only one submitting your resume. They will have to assess each submission by making comments and evaluations. For the word document, they can insert their comments against each entry in the resume. However for PDF resumes, they will have to print it out first, then write their comments manually. The comments on the printed PDF resume will thus not be capture electronically and the HR has to open a file to store your resume, instead of storing electronically.
So... dun always think of beauty... Practicality matters most. If you are so worried about the professional look.... then here's my advice.... send a PDF copy and a word copy.

The HR ppl tends to lean towards doc, folks from the design side would prefer PDF and the rest... mixed preferences.
Colours wise, less is more and avoid coloured background. -

I still remember when I first graduated I type out my resume in a .txt file. Yes it is and employers still read it. However as time goes by, Word seem to be what they want but the file size will be bigger.

All my friend uses .doc format cause PDF some computer might not have the software. Imagine submiting a resume electronically in .pdf and your potential employer doesn't have PDF installed ?

Like that ar, then I'm gladful my company owns a licence to use adobe acrobat reader/converter legally.

Has it not occurred to you that maybe the particular person who is supposed to vet your CV do not want to bother d/ling the s/w just to view your CV?
Its all commonsense really. The large majority of computers out there can read word documents. I do not think that is the same of pdf files. If you want to send pdf file, by all means do so, but do not make that the only method of delivery.
Re what i mean when i say it uses more resources than it needs to. Nowadays, many people and (coys!) use pdf for no reason other than that it has cross platform compatibility, it is uneditable (well....) and ....? I suggest that satisfy those simple functions, the adobe reader software consumes to much computer power and resources.
btw, you can make word documents editable by clicking on tools -

word document is preferred. don't ever send PDF file.
some large companies store resume in one place. and the key person will use s/w or search engine to search certain key words..
PDF cannot be searched properly. Word is better.
Send doc document and remember... don't send fancy fancy font, format..
just plain text is enough...
otherwise, differnt version of office may present your word document wrongly...
i hired many people. this is my opinion.
