the difference bwt vinyl and cast iron free weights?

what is the difference between the materials used to make the free weights ah?
i want to buy some free weights and train at home but i thought i better do some research first. and where can i buy the cheapest set because i dont wish to spend too much. then how come certain brands so ex while others not so ex ah? what is the difference in quality for the free weights? dont tell me lower quality the free weights drop once spoil liao? -
Essentially the same thing, since you are training on weights so quality don't really matter.
But this is what i notice, you get cheap cheap weights and don't maintain, the bar will rust quite easily.
Cast iron weights you cannot drop it or it will literally crack into 2 or more pieces.
Vinyl encapsulated or plastic weights are almost the same thing, vinyl ones are just a layer of vinyl covering a cast iron weight underneath. Plastic weight usually contain concrete or cement.
I suggest for $48, you get this Kettler set, you get 2 1.25kg and 2 2.25kg and the bar. Then from then you can get the extra weights seperately.

where can i get this $48 set? actually vinyl better or cast iron?
i was checking yahoo auctions a few days earlier. found someone selling 30kgs worth of vinyl weights. too bad his auction closed and he changed his hp number. he was selling for only $25 !!! -
o ya can i use vinyl weights with cast iron on the same bar? what are the pros and cons of each type? i went google to find but i cant get info on this. thanks

Vinyl plates will not rust but they are twice as bulky. Bulky means you cannot load as many plates and the diameter of the plate is also bigger so you have less range of movement in certain lifts. After about 3-5 years the vinyl will crack so shorter life time but they are cheaper. I suggest you go with rubber coated if you want to reduce noise. Otherwise cast iro on a piece of carpet is good too.

the $48 set. from Carrefour, Giant or sportslink lor. remember the brand kettler.
a rusty or oxidised bar doesn't matter. but you imagine yourself doing weight and see the bar rusty you also feel disgusted one.
but if you realy give good maintenance... like after work out go wipe it... then keep it in a dry place.... should be ok.
whether vinyl or cast iron are interchangeable on the same bar depends one. Depends on the diameter of the donut hole. haah.
cast iron ones usually smaller. -

you can even improvise.haha.. hang buckets of water on bamboo poles.haha.
the hole.. dunno leh.. i think cast iron one smaller.
one thing you should also see if the weights will "wobble" when you are workign out. it's best if you can geting something where you can screw tight. -
i used to use bottles of water in plastic bags to train. but in end give up. the plastic bag tore right through my gloves.

why dont u go to a gym..they have whole range of dumbells..
buying dumbells isnt good way to train....i was like u last yr..bought various dumbells of diff weights..not effective leh....either too heavy for certain exercise or too light...unless u got plenty of cash to spent la.. -
