PM: RM2bil set aside for small contractors
PUTRAJAYA: Some RM2bil has been allocated this year for projects for small contractors, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.
He added that RM1bil was for maintenance projects, of which some 6,200 projects worth RM343mil had been approved for Class F contractors.
The Prime Minister said a further RM1bil had been set aside for minor infrastructure projects meant for Class E and Class F contractors.
“We have decided that these projects should not be given to Class A contractors, only to the small contractors,” he said, adding that last year, 40% of the Class F contractors were awarded projects.
“There are projects being offered to Class F contractors but there are 35,000 Class F contractors.
“It is not easy to give every single one of them contracts. This does not even happen elsewhere.”
Last year, the Government allocated RM500mil for 15,435 maintenance projects that were distributed to 13,761 contractors.
Responding to a question on the protest by MPs on the setting-up of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission, Abdullah said he had given his answers on the issue in Parliament and “they understood”.
