The Lord of the Stage I had the pleasure of attending the Lord of The Rings premiere this weekend in Toronto and it was truly an amazing experience. Though your average theatre critic may be dismayed by the extreme special effects and the visual onslaught of pyrotechnics, do not be mislead, this production is larger then life for a reason.
Toronto was chosen as the host for this production for several reasons and the city hopes to live up to the expectations. The show has been cast with actors from around the world and the team pulls off a gripping performance that flows wonderfully. The production value is meticulous and I think it is safe to say that the world has never seen a production that combines the charm of theatre with the bang of a rock concert. Though it is not billed as a musical, the music stands out as another highlight. I had a great opportunity to chat with AR Rahman the day of the premiere and he spoke very highly about his experience scoring the production and working with artists from around the world. Rahmans touch can be heard through out the play from the intense scenes to the melodic numbers. BTW, anyone catch Rahmans song at the opening of Spike Lees new movie? I urge those interested in coming to Toronto to take the time to see this play as it was an experience that I cherished and enjoyed from start to finish. Oh and its over 3 hours long, perfect for any Indian movie fan.

And Denzel Washington's new movie by Spike LEE " Inside Man" pays homage to AR Rahman's famous Chaiya Chaiya song.
Finally this talented musician is being embraced by Hollywood

Anyway Lord of the RIngs released now is not tamil or hindi sngs of his. International music.
He has released his first international soundrack in 1997 called Vande Mataram
If u have an doubts. he has already released a Chinese soundtrack called Warriors of heaven and Earth with single by Jolin Tsai.
And his another work with Andrew Loyd Webber was outstanding
Ans he did a track in Vanessa Mae's latest "Choreography" soundtrack
So i think if u are a LOTR fan, then try to get the soundtrack.

I am a fan the movies. But i am curious to check out whar AR did with LOTR. It is not a tamil or indi movie. It is 27 million dollar production
Because he's probably doesnt read Tolkien but given his track record, directors in India whom he worked with have said he has an uncanny ability to visualise the theme of the story or what music is required to fit the story really well even better than them.
what his music is special is that it is made in a different way. The music flows smoothly with layers upoun layers of creative sounds. Sounds which have not heard in English songs. AR uses a LOT of computer. Not about machines replacing humans... The sounds in the machines are nothing but sampled by humans itself. Like the VSTi (Virtual Instrument) MIDI programming for every beat/note/key.
How to call it. "coloured sound" will be a better word.
