Teacher hurt by ammo paperweight
A TEACHER lost part of his hand after it was blown off when a 40mm round of ammunition he used as a paperweight on his desk exploded in his classroom.
Mr Robert Colla struck the round with an object while teaching a class at the Ventura Adult Education Centre in California.
Part of his right hand was severed and he suffered severe burns and minor shrapnel wounds to his forearms and torso. No one else was injured.
Mr Dennis Huston, who teaches alongside Mr Colla, said he had his back to Mr Colla and was about a metre away when he heard a loud bang. He said Mr Colla had found the round while hunting, and 'obviously he didn't think the round was live'. -- ASSOCIATED PRESS -

How come he survived and that guy who is 1 metre away is unhurt. -

im thinking, the reason the effective radius of the shell seems diminished might be because it was likely to be facing up, rather than down.
Normally when a 40mm shell detonates, it would be due to it striking a solid object head on. This means the resultant expanding pressure is vented sideways and backwards. As the shell in question was likely facing up, if it's used as a paperweight, then most of the explosive pressure from the detonation would have been vented upwards in a cone, instead of in a hemisphere towards the side and back as it normally would. This would explain why it did not cause as much injury as it was expected to.
Also, we have to bear in mind the probability that this was a defective round, or that it might have been lying there long enough that its explosive compounds have decayed and is less effective. -

Actually, Bush's table in his Oval Office in the White House (the Resolute Desk) is in fact made from the remains of a decommissioned British warship - the HMS Resolute.
