Queries on the semi conductor industry.

I am going to ORD this August and I plan to work in a semi-conductor/wafer fabrication industry since I was specilised in that area in poly. But I have some queries:
1) Is it true that because the semi-conductor industry requires 12 hours shift work so many people don't want to work there and thus there are many job opportunties there?
2) Is it true working in this line - although working 12 hours shift - requires to work only 15 days per month. For example, 2 restdays after 2 working days? -
It depends on what type of position you're applying.
If the jobscope involves production, you will have to follow the 12 hr shift patterns as production runs 24/7 in semicon industries.
Some shift patterns are 2 days 2 rest, (same as police)
Some are 3days, 2 rest, 2 days, 3 rest.
Some are 4 days, 2 rest(work for 1 month Day shift, next change to night shift).
If you count the number of working 12 hrs days, it is true that you wokr for about 15-20 days per month only.
But if spread out say normal 5ays work week, each day work 8 to 9 nrs, it still equals to 15-20 days per mth, 12hrs per day.
It all depends whether you can tahan or not.
Some cant tahan, but some like cos they can rest more days.
Realistically, if you're a dip holder or a avg deg holder, working 12hrs shift will not get you far in terms of career prospects, cos you are stuck with production and you have little chance to interact with management.
Of cors, if you happen to catch the eye of management, and they think you have prospect, they will prefer to ask you work normal shift.
Some ppl prefer to stay away from management, prefering to piah for OTs and higher pay by working in shifts.

I would like to add, that if possible try not to work in any line which require you to work shifts such as 12-hour shift or 12 hour rotating night shift, because the human body cannot take it. Majority of people who work rotating night shift burn out sooner or later. It is taxing, physically, mentally, and socially. After a while you will feel the effect. I hope you consider this.

In Semicon industry, especially if you work in the Fab, you have to be smocked up all the time. Also, your hands are always encased in rubber gloves. Damn uncomfortable for 12 hrs because you sweat inside the smock as well as the gloves.
Worst case is if you have a bad cold or upset stomach...can you imagine the discomfort..??..
