SINGAPORE : The government has shortlisted a few potential sites for the construction of a retirement village, and the National Development Ministry is currently studying the details.
The sites are on a 30-year land lease.
And one of them will be picked to test market demand for such villages.
In an exclusive interview with MediaCorp's Channel 8, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said in the past, the idea of building retirement villages was put on the back burner as Singapore's problem of an ageing population was not as serious as that in Europe and America.
The Singapore market was also too small for retirement villages to be commercially viable.
But the prospects have since changed.
With a rapidly ageing Singapore population, Mr Khaw said in five years' time, retirement villages will become economically viable.
One obstacle is the high costs of land in Singapore.
"My personal view is, our land is expensive. But we have nearby neighbours in Johore, Batam and Bintan. The elderly want to reach their doctors within half to one hour. So retirement villages in neighbouring countries is possible, barring the cross-border hassle. It is best to find cheap land on short leases," said Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

Wont those old folks feel more stressed up to see their neighbours and friends around them going off 1 by 1 in the retirement village? Its like waiting for death. -

Just thinking that many old folk homes in singapore going to close down in the future....cause no old people ma...
And all of them are in a camp far away from us...(in restricted zone)..haha

It sounds more than a concentration camp if it's meant for old folks to retire there. They're seeing their neighbours leaving her one after another.

They are to dig their own grave and make their own coffin. Cut costs of employing workers and undertakers. -

Does this announcement mean for ppl like me already planning on our retirement in Msia can save all our troubles planning as our gahmen will have already thought and planned it all out for us?
Our gahmen is indeed a super nannny!!! They care for us until we died!!!! Let's rejoice hahahaha -
some kids don't even visit their parents when they are in singapore...
its scary that this is all I can look for when I get old. To be booted out to some foreign country to die. -
This is definitely a good proposal. Hope to hear some promises on these and proper proposal with pricing showed to us with figure. I can't wait any more.

Dumping our old folks on an island away from Singapore is both heartless and ungrateful. Our seniors have done quite a bit building up this nation and when they are old and feeble we dump them. Old people need to be near their loved ones and in familiar surroundings as well as near medical facilities. land in Singapore is costly but nevertheless it belongs to us. So, what is wrong with using it for our old folks and ourselves because in time we will also become old and feeble. I thought they say that if we produce babies, our children will in future take care of us when we grow old??
I guess they must've realized that in reality, living standards in future, may be far too costly for our children to take care of us?

The message in this action :
- old folks are a burden
- no one wants to take care of them
- old folks are poor and therefore will weigh down the economy
- dispense with dealing with old folks & their issues to another country
- it alright to abandon old folks even if they built the country to this stage
- thankfulness, piety, loyality and other values are useless in the name of progress.
Everyone will be a old folk one day.
Government wants to have more kids as each kid will bring more workers to the economy to make more money for the government. Therefore the world's developed countries are interested in young people and call them "future". But when they grow old, this money wil need to be channeled back to take care of them which is exactly where this backflow is being prevented or an attempt to reduce this backflow - to keep the money in the economy and push the country/corporation ahead. We are in a way like working for a company. When we are in our prime, the company love us, when we have used up our ideas and we are struggling to keep up with the new ideas, the company dump us.
Anyways, govenment already call us quitters. I guess this is all the more reason to call it quits here. The smart and mobile people saw this coming and migrated out and even willing become 2nd class in other people's country rather than to be 3rd class in our own. -
