Hmm I don't know, how permanent can the perm position be? If tomorrow the company close down, no longer permanent leh? How long is the contract position? If you don't mind, be a bit hardworking, go for contract positions lor. So everytime if contract finishing, can start looking for another one. Don't know if this can work. Might be harder. Maybe the permanent one more convenient lah. Quite secure. But if not happy with the job how liao?Originally posted by vasteel:Hi, I just received a job offer yesterday which is a perm position dealing in Payroll matters. Pay is around $1.2K and will be starting work tomorrow. Place is near my vicinity and standard 8 - 5 working hours. Rare OT. Sounds decent? Well..
I studied Diploma in Banking/Financial Services. Before I actually receive the job offer yesterday, I was scheduled to have an interview with a job agency about a 6-mths contract bank position and after which, I am to later attend another interview at the bank itself. This contract position offers a higher salary but comes with lots of OT. Well, since I got a perm offer, I was thinking..the heck with the bank interview. I even got "humtum" by the job consultant who was pissed when I told her I was not going for the interview when she called me.
Well, anyway, was my decision right? Is the perm or contract position better? Should I have taken the contract bank job which was related to my field of study with "hopes" of converting to a perm position?
Experienced veterans can share their opinions...
i got to agree with you......i am in the IT line & the job /s offered is sux......Originally posted by CPL:Perm job definitely more secure than contract, IMHO..
Also, your entitlements in terms of leave and medical insurance coverage are there vs contract which normally is "Jiak Karki"...
Nowadays, it's quite difficult to get perm job, especially in IT line, where the norm is contract terms. So, if a perm job comes along, grab it with both hands![]()
Again, it depends on what industry you are talking about. MNCs are not that easy to be gone unless they act like ENRON. SME, maybe. Partnership and sole-proprietorship, definitely in the matter of time.Originally posted by dinky1409:Hmm I don't know, how permanent can the perm position be? Wow. OT pay is sure a must. DOn me like me working everyday extra 4-5 ot without ANY OT pay....Originally posted by jeffning:Checklist in progress....Qualified by Dip. in Banking/Financial Services.
Permanent job in payroll matters for SGD1,200.00 per month.
Working hours 8 am to 5 pm.
Passed higher salary in contract job for lower salaried permanent job.
Was your decision right? It's your call.
Which is better position: permanent or contract? Most of the time is permanent.
Hope to convert contract job to a perm position. Possible if you take action as well.
Here is my 2 cents' worth of perspectives.
Diploma-qualified job candidate should secure between SGD1,400.00 and SGD1,600.00 in the current job market. I consider it an insult since we can get better pay by becoming a local bank teller with A Level qualification starting at SGD1,100.00. Unless you are not motivated by monetary terms or influenced by industry you wish to work in, I guess it is a good permanent job due to market trend for contract basis. Sound like your company is foreign one by the timing of your working hours.
Banking and finance industry requires its people to work long hours with voluminous workload. So, you tend to get OT pay that sees your miserable salary of SGD1,200.00 ballooned to about SGD2,500.00. Wait, visualise this. Consecutive OTs for 5 days in a week that last more than four hours per day. Then, what I foresaid is possible.
Actually we have to scrutinise in many aspects to make a decision that based on your career planning, expectation, values and ideals.
Mmm, temp staff. Sure, they can be nude for all I care. Put it this way. What do you look for when you buy a car, a computer system or a moon cake? The packaging, right? Same here.Originally posted by Nikar2:just curious, though. if you're in a temp position(like 3 - 4 months) working as an admin clerk etc., is it that you can wear those casual home clothes to work?(like shirt/t-shirt + jeans/pants etc.)
because i see some of my friends work in office for temp positions and they can wear casual clothes leh.
thanks,
nikar.
sad to say that the min qualification for SG here is degree else you are hard to survive here and the pay you be getting for fresh ite/poly is an insult......Originally posted by jeffning:Checklist in progress....Qualified by Dip. in Banking/Financial Services.

thanks jeff! 2 more questions :
1) after temp staff is converted to perm staff, do they have to wear those long-sleeve shirts, tucked-in?technical speaking yes
2) is it temp staff always being treated differently/coldly by the perm staff workers? i seem to be a victim of "second-class citizen" treatment, even though i worked hard, never surf net at all during job hours etc.![]()
sometimes in this cold hard reality yes.....
thanks,
nikar.
true true.... nowadays salary has gone down a lot, but prices remain the same or increased....Originally posted by duotiga83:sad to say that the min qualification for SG here is degree else you are hard to survive here and the pay you be getting for fresh ite/poly is an insult......
