Why do people like using "......" instead of just "."?

But seriously, I often use those dots to magnify or emphasise a train of thought, rather than make the sentence 'sound' and appear 'staccato-like'. People DO get 'breathless' reading long sentences with just the token punctuation marks such as the commas and semi-colons to mark a 'lull' in the sentence. People also get 'breathless' when reading a paragraph and having to stop every few words or so.
More than just for the writer per se, I think the "..." (Rule of thumb: No More than 3!!) serves as a breather for the reader itself. However, this usually makes sense only for long sentences that's a continuous explanation of a point - rather than as a substitute for a co-ordinating conjunction such as "and", "morever", "but" or "therefore" to connect two seperate sentences.
Of course, it is grammatically incorrect, for there are no (not that I know of, at least) punctuation mark name for the "...", and in proper written English of higher levels, such blatant and lazy usage of dots to string a sentence together is frowned upon.
But until my forum posts are graded - I'll stick to my dotty conjunctions. -
Just found out - it officially has a term to describe it.
Apparently it's called an "ellipsis"
- the series of three dots (periods) in a row that indicates a word or phrase has been omitted.

I can understand the usage of Singapore slang or internet abbreviations as they increase the speed at which you can type and articulate yourself, but "......." requires six key strokes instead of one.

list down all the kopitiam exoticas you can think of ... see which of you can confound the kopitiam aunties ... Twisted Evil

"Gee.......... I can't remember." <- conveys the pause made by the person making the statement.
"I don't know........" <- conveys the way the sentence trails off as spoken by the person making the statement.
".........' <- denotes speechlessness, usually due to surprise, being flabbergasted or being nonplussed. -
Simply because writing message has evolved. In the past there is no need as letters written are read days later. But for now we often chated and messaged in real time. The words helps to expression your expression better. It is useful. Its rubbish to think that a language should forevever remain the same. Even english language evolved over time since ancient time to suit us better. Mean are also often changed. So therefore language changes to suit us now better.
