Why are handphones and transmitting device need to be turned off in most of the planes?

Actually, it is widely accepted that Cellular signals will remotely affect on-board navigation.
This remote chance is further reduced by the amount of metal between you and the avionics equipment.
However, since cell phone manufacturers produces their fone that may emit an unexpected electro magnetic wave. Airlines want to be on the safer side and ask you to switch off.
Usually only the person sitting directly on top and his immediate surrounding can affect the avionics.
Moreover, they only affect the electronic avionics. Pilots are trained to use manual navigation. So there is still redundancy -

oh yeah, japanese trains also dun allow handphone to be on during the journey... same principle... in fact, they made it "impossible to use the mobile phones on the platforms and in the trains by changing the location and direction of the antennas"...

There was this occasion when I forgot to switch my mobile off and boarded a flight. I placed it in a bag so I was totally unaware. When I arrived at my destination and took out my mobile, it was on coz I realised I didn't switch it off. Oops.
