in the past, there was Big Muskie (which is now gone to scrapyard heaven), an open dragline excavator which was so huge, it was almost beyond belief... it walked with 2 hydralic "feet" and could move 39 million pounds of earth and rock an hour..

check out the size of the bucket in the middle pic and compare it to the whole thing and imagine the size of Big Muskie

Big Muskie was built at a staggering cost (then) of US$25 million in 1969 and was dismantled in 1999
now, we have THIS huge machine in Germany...

built by Krupps, this monster costs about US$100 million and weighs in at 45,500 tons! it is about 3 times the size of Big Muskie!
staggering aren't they?
