WOOT GO APHOPHIS! <3Originally posted by SixSentinels:Mark your calendar for Sunday, April 13, 2036. That's when a 1,000-foot-wide (300metre-wide) asteroid named Apophis could hit the Earth with enough force to obliterate a small state. The odds of a collision are 1-in-6,250, from a 1-in-15,000 chance predicted last December.
But while that's a long shot at the racetrack, the stakes are too high for astronomers to ignore. For now, Apophis represents the most imminent threat from the worst type of natural disaster known, one reason NASA is spending millions to detect the threat from this and other asteroids.
A direct hit on an urban area could unleash more destruction than Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake combined. The blast would equal 880 million tons of TNT or 65,000 times the power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Objects this size are thought to hit Earth about once every 1,000 years, and, according to recent estimates, the risk of dying from a renegade space rock is comparable to the hazards posed by tornadoes and snakebites.
where u get this info' from? command and conquer 3: tiberium wars? LOLOriginally posted by DriftingGuy:By 2036 we will have ion cannons that can shoot ions beams more powerful than the death star
kantoi! now i will make a bigger construction company than ursOriginally posted by Darkness_hacker99:I think 75% chance the asteroid will hit the sea. So I think when I grow up, I will set up a construction company waiting for that day to come. Hehe, so I can earn big bucks.
Newspapers print it so often that they neglect one fact. Upon hitting Earth, they might shrink because of friction. So impact might not be that big at all, unless the asteriod is damn huge.Originally posted by redheaded:well, ppl. i've heard of this piece of news months ago too...it's in the papers... too bad this will occur in our time..hmmm, luckily this won't human race, but it's sure enough to cause massive destruction.damn
So are we going to die from the asteroid hitting the earth???Originally posted by DriftingGuy:By 2036 we will have ion cannons that can shoot ions beams more powerful than the death star
By the time the "asteriod" hit Earth, it will become dust. That collects in our homes and have to vacuum up.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Newspapers print it so often that they neglect one fact. that millenium bug or whatever the crap it is, is an ASSUMPTION. what im talking about is a PREDICTION. There is more value in a prediction than an assumption.Originally posted by blowfish:yr 2000, where computer go haywired!!!!!!!!!!!!
that actually depends on wtf NASA and DARPA or the ESA is doing at the moment. currently the american space agency is not getting enough money to fund its space projects so who knows when the ion cannons or asteroid-deflectors are gonna be built? and we still have to make prototypes to guarantee a success in the device we are gonna use, that would take years, and the cost of building such an device would be so high...Originally posted by DriftingGuy:By 2036 we will have ion cannons that can shoot ions beams more powerful than the death star
dont u know a 300m wide asteroid hitting the sea causes 3 and a half times more damage than on land? tsunamis created would reach heights of 75-110 metres and wipe out all coastal settlements?Originally posted by Darkness_hacker99:I think 75% chance the asteroid will hit the sea. Brother, it's not an ASSUMPTION. It's a fact. Anyway, fixed before year 2000 caused problems for us. It's due the way engineers programmed it and had to fix the error.Originally posted by SixSentinels:that millenium bug or whatever the crap it is, is an ASSUMPTION. what im talking about is a PREDICTION. 300m wide while in space shouldn't cause too much harm when it hits Earth because of friction.Originally posted by SixSentinels:dont u know a 300m wide asteroid hitting the sea causes 3 and a half times more damage than on land? tsunamis created would reach heights of 75-110 metres and wipe out all coastal settlements?
