Kallang body parts murderer gets death sentence
By Rita Zahara, Channel NewsAsiaThe former factory supervisor accused of butchering his lover after her death has been found guilty of murder.
51-year-old Leong Siew Chor was sentenced to death for killing 22-year-old Chinese national, Liu Hong Mei.
Liu's dismembered body parts were found along the Kallang River last June.
Leong Siew Chor claimed that he and Liu made a suicide pact to die together but he backed out after strangling her to death.
The High Court rejected his defence.
In passing sentence, Judge Tay Yong Kwang said: "The deceased's demise in the Geylang flat on 15 June 2005 was no spontaneous suicide. It was a horrific homicide. It was a most disgusting and despicable murder. Liu Hong Mei died a very cruel, heartbreaking death."
Justice Tay also included these lines at the end of his
33-page judgment.
This truly is a sad riddle
How could one savagely strangle
And so unfeelingly mangle
The woman one had just cuddled? Justice Tay believed
Liu was a lively young woman who was not a person given to mood swings and suicidal thoughts.
She had made plans to be a bridesmaid at her sister's wedding and she was also doing well at work.
Describing Leong as a "consistent liar",
Justice Tay was convinced that Leong had killed his lover to silence her, to stop her from exposing his theft of her ATM card and more than $2,000 from her bank account.
The court also heard the
accused did not show any remorse after killing Lui.
His actions after her death were swift and sure and did not present a picture of a man who was agonising over a lover whom he claimed he helped to commit suicide. Leong presented the same calm demeanour when the judge sentenced him to death.
The courtroom was packed but none of Leong's family members were present.Subhas Anandan, Defence Lawyer, said: "The fact that they didn't come to court doesn't mean anything. They are supportive in the sense that they went and visit him regularly, they pay his legal fees and they showed concern by calling us practically every other day to find out what's happening. So I would say they have been supportive. I get a feeling that until this event, they were a closed knit family."
Leong has indicated to his lawyers that he wants to appeal, which he has to do so within the next 14 days. - CNA/ch
