Actually, you can't blame him for feeling that way cos most terrorism today is committed by muslim. Be it in Russia, Spain, London, New York, Even China & Thailand have problems with their muslim countrymen. I have said in my earlier post that not all of them are like that, its just that the few are making the news. They even kill fellow muslims. Therefore, how can you blame him for forming this perception.
In my earlier post i asked, Why can't a muslim convert to another religion? Is it allowed? If a Christian or Buddhist wishes to convert into a Muslim, there wouldn't be much problem but on the other hand, This cannot happen with islam. I recalled not too long ago, a Afghanistan man wanted to convert to Christianity and he was sentenced to death by the court. I guess its a bit over-doing it right? Cos no civilize country should kill another cos he choose to belief in another faith don't you all agree?
Lastly, as i have said earlier, I still believed that religion needs to be embrace and not forced upon one. These link is the chapter 9 from where you have got your quote Al Quran[9:5] from. If you had read the whole chapter, you would probably get a clearer understanding and not just selective reading. Try reading the chapter without any bias feelings and you will find that your misunderstandings will be cleared.

(Pardon me if I got this wrong) The "non-believers" actually meant those who knew and understand what Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) had delivered to them but intentionally reject the teachings, although they had seen and experienced the "powers" of God(I don't know how to phrase this but God gave all his prophets "powers" to aid them in convincing the people). Some of these "non-believers", or rather most, at that period of time, were not "peaceful" and were out to destroy the teachings and Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) himself. This is where the concept of Jihad comes in. "Protection" of oneself, and the religion, if threatened. That's all.

Singaporeans live in a multiracial society and have to be sensitive to members of other races and religion. It is legitimate to ask questions about other faiths, but not in the tone or manner of the threadstarter. I cannot help but think that his intention is not to inquire but to incite hatred.

As for your views that the trend of Islam being branded as terrorism started in the early 90's i think its wrong. Islam was never branded or related to terrorism through out the 90's at all. It was only after 2001 New York that made people think otherwise. The fact that it is unfortunate that Osama used the religion to commit acts of killing the innocent was despicable. In my views, this person and his followers has done a disservice to the religion and give Islam a bad name by killing more innocent people in Russia, Spain, London, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, Indonesia...
For your views that oil is the reason for the war, Its not true. Oil was never a commodity for the last 1000 yrs, maybe only the last 100. Have any western country taken over the middle east oil production? In fact, todays oil prices only benefit the Middle East countries and done them no harm at all.
Actually, the west & middle east enjoyed a reasonably good relation over the years... In fact, when Russia, the old Soviet Union had wanted to conquer Afghanistan during the 70s 80s period, note Afghanistan have no oil wells. It was the US that came to the aid of the Afghanistan state. Some had wondered that had the US not intervene then, todays problems could be a lot lesser and maybe Osama might have been dead a long time ago already.
For your endorsement for suicide bombers i think its sad. Cos i can't possibly see any reason whatever, how anyone can support such a thing. And further more, there are leaderships of sorts in place in various countries..in singapore, MUIS with the mufti and all are the muslim leadership within singapore..the leadership helps make decisions with regards to the application of the Quran and other religious guides with regards to the our modern day lives..Yet even with the leadership structures which are in place..the terrorism still occurs..and why?
Well because any form of leadership takes control in a macro perspective, there will always be so called little chiefs whom would guide the followers at the grassroots levels..it is nearly impossible to police all these little pockets of teachings..which more often than now share most key ideology and diverge at small branchpoints..Hence, the problem with islam at present is not so much a lack of leadership but a sense of being oppressed at the grassroots level..
The cartoon fiasco, as much as it was a religious matter of the lack of respect to Islam's religious icon, was also a result of the way immigrants were being treated in the region..and given that many of the immigrants are muslims..the unhappiness towards the oppression simply bubbled over..and the cartoons became the straw that broke the camels back..
The general problem of terrorism can be traced to the unhappiness towards what is being seen as an indifferent approach towards Muslims being oppressed, with Palestine being the most clear cut example..Driven from their land by the Isrealis who occupied it for the longest time..Isrealis targetted killings of the pretty much defenceless Palestinians..How many palestinian civilians have been killed by the Isreali armed forces?Has anyone really noticed how the IAF would take out a "key HAMAS leader" with a helicopter mounter with rockets and machine guns...and in the meantime kill civilians in the area..including kids and all?A MILITARY ACTION sanctioned the government..to kill civilians..and deciding death is a fair judgement without a proper trial?yet..no action is taken..is it no wonder, that you end up with pockets of unhappy muslims?And..is it fair to say that the acts of terrorism is due to Islam..or is it fairer to say ..it is due to the socio-political issues that have led to these reactionary acts..While the acts should not be condoned,i find it unfair to attach the blame to a "militant" Islam...as the culprits are merely Muslims who are unhappy with socio-political conditions and are trying to fight the oppression.. -

I understand your reservations but given the present state where no one is in charged and you see people like osama step up, i think one with a supreme leader would be better. But unfortunately, this won't happen cos the Islamic faith presently is just too divided. -

In Exodus, Creator of Isreal people said that his children are not to marry people of other race, but to destroy them when contacted, because they worship other gods...somethig like that, but I gonna check those Quran verse.. Qur¡¯an 8:39 ¡°So, fight them till all opposition ends and the only religion is Islam.¡±
from what i know, islam is the only religion that wants its believers to DESTROY the non-believers. Other religions like christianity, instead instructs believers to convert believers. Should the non-believers fail to convert, they perish in hell.
so that means, if you're a hardcore muslim, you're probably a terrorist, because of all those instructions in the quran.

Chapter 9
4 Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him).
5 Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Chapter 8
38 Tell those who disbelieve that if they cease (from persecution of believers) that which is past will be forgiven them; but if they return (thereto) then the example of the men of old hath already gone (before them, for a warning).
39 And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.
Islam is AN UPRIGHT BELIEF, though I am non-muslim. It taught to love neighbours and enemies, be compassionate to others, etc. -

I understand your reservations but given the present state where no one is in charged and you see people like osama step up, i think one with a supreme leader would be better. But unfortunately, this won't happen cos the Islamic faith presently is just too divided.
