My personal view is dragg definition of ping hu rules seem logical. That is unless self rub, you must wait for 2 tiles then can win.
So going by threadstarter example, since 8 cannot be used to win since it is discarded by him earlier, waiting on a 5 alone in the same round cannot be constituted as a win. It must be in the next round waiting for 2 tiles then can win.
However to tell the truth, my frens last time play is can. Hahahhaa.... no one cry father cry mother.... i.e we allow 5 to game in that same round but not 8. Now thinking back, dragg argument seem more valid. So last time steal chicken success lor hehehehe....

every mahjong player must have encountered this situation countless of times.
if you throw 8 and hu 5 thats char wu because ping hu have to "listen" to 2 different tiles at one time. otherwise it is considered as ka loong. ka loong is not accepted in ping hu. -
What i will do is eat 4 5 6 then throw 3... Then u got 7,8,9,9 wait for 6 and 9...
Or if u wanna eat 3 4 5, then i will throw 9... Then u got 6,7,8,9 wait for 6 and 9 -

Above is same as threadstarter problem. You throw a 9, can you game in the same round with a 6 ? It is same problem with number switched only. Do you get the threadstarter question? -
as long as it is agreeable among the players at the table it is ok.
make sure you 'qiang' (hokkien) if playing with someone outside your circle.
some people play with different rules. -

For me I prefer self rub... self rub more shiok lar and then got more tiles can win more money -

threadstarter has to specify all the shapes of the tiles. are 3, 5 and 6 all bamboos? -

You all know when got flower or gong you will take one tile from the other side rite? Suppose when you draw from that side and it happen to be your winning tile and also self rub scenario. So the counting is how many tiles you have on hand + 1 more since the winning tile is drawn from that side?
Is the above counting correct? -

One more trivial mahjong question. When got 4 of the same tiles you all shout gong3 or kan3 ? And when win you all shout game or hu2 or gao3 ?

got qns...what is "di hu"....hu within the first round? and what is tian hu?

the zhuang jia hu at the very beginning of the game is tian hu.
whoever hu when the zhuang jia throws the first tile is di hu.
I would assume it is max 5 tiles for above scenarios? -
both r win the game in the 1st round.. "tian hu" is only applicable to the host of tat round. tat means when he open his 14 tiles, he can win without discarding any tiles.. tian hu i think is 10, di hu is 9.
most singaporeans play to the limit of 5 only. -
