SOLO — Firebrand Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, 68, who served time for his role in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed over 200 people, reportedly called Islamic extremists "misguided" holy warriors, as Australia's Prime Minister yesterday called for the cleric to be monitored.

Bashir, who was released on Wednesday from a prison in Jakarta at the end of a nearly 26-month term, also said that Mr Howard should convert to Islam if he wants to avoid going to hell.

When asked by reporters if he had a message for the Australian leader, he said: "If he wants to be saved from hell, he needs to convert to Islam and God willing, he will be forgiven by Allah."

The cleric also warned Australia not to fight against Muslims. "Maybe with God's permission they can kill us, but they certainly can't beat Islam.
