In order to understand this, you need to go back and see the fundamental reason, to know why north korea kept one of the largest armies in the world, and tried to develop nuclear weapons. You need to go to the roots, the background.
It's not because they have nothing better to do, it's because they feel they are besieged and threatened by USA and Japan. They are under constant worry. They have a deep sense of insecurity, that their nation is vulnerable.
Perhaps this feeling is a similar situation like in Singapore, where there is a underlying constant worry, and as a result there is military conscription in Singapore. Why do countries like Singapore have military conscription while some countries not? Why does north korea keep a large army and test missiles and develop nuclear weapons while some countries not? In order to know the answer you have to understand their situation and their mentality, what are they facing, what kind of conditions and challenges their country is in.
Right now north korea wants to negotiate directly with US. Why? because this is the root of all the insecurity and mistrust, this is basically a problem between north korea and US all along, a long lingering legacy problem from the past, resulting in the present regional setting. North korea has asked for bilateral negotiation directly with USA, apart from the six party talks, to fundamentally and strategically sort out their differences. USA has avoided and rejected any bilateral talks, it insists to use six party talks only. USA knows that if it gets 'to the real business' and not just the superficial talks, its strategic position may be jeopardized in the region, and it can lose some of its stranglehold and influence in the region. USA doesnt want to change the status quo, or its power.

Whatever you read, please dont dumb down your brain by following whatever is written. Firstly, western media is biased. Secondly, Singapore falls under the western sphere of influence. Whatever AP/ AFP/ Reuters write and their views will be parroted and re-broadcasted, since Singapore leaders had decided to allay themselves with Western blocs. This is the same like how Saddam or Iraq, or Iran is the case now, is always portrayed badly in the news in Singapore. Dont adopt their world view blindly. -

This is an age of the global village, the international community. You don't simply do anything you like as there will be international reaction and repercussions. NK might, just MIGHT, cause an arms race and their blatant disregard for their neighbours MIGHT cause unstability in their region.
Of course your analysis of the underlying reasons for their behaviour seems plausible enough and I kind of agree with you. I feel its more mentality than situation. -

What you say is true, the North has the sovereign right to do what it pleases within the confines of its borders. Just like the owner of a house is rightly justified to do what he/she wants within the boundaries of his legal home.
But when that line is crossed, like the North's missile passing over Japan and beyond, it becomes an act of aggression and constitutes an ACT OF WAR.
Legally, Japan can respond with equal force against such belligerent actions by testy North Koreans.
Would the North like the Japs to fire a live missile over North Korean airspace? Would the North respond calmly as the Japs have? Or will they initiate aggressive behaviour instead?
The North is acting like a bully and a thug, demanding food and economic aid in exchange for reviewing their nuclear and ballistic missile development. This is classic international blackmail; why should anyone respond favourably? The pressure and tactics employed by the US to combat this is typical of bullyboy strategies: respond with the same force as threatened by the bully.
I'm only surprised China is not leaning more weight on their neighbours.
And while you blindly side the North, keep in mind that they have done nothing for their people. Nationally, their country is imporvished; their people are starving. Economically, their GDP ranks as one of the worst in the world, no doubt helped significantly by their closed door policy to trade. It seems the only thing they trade in is arms and weapons deals. And with other rogue nations like Iran, no less.
Western Media like CNN and BBC are certainly biased to some extent, but we are definitely more than educated to ascertain the truths from the falsehoods. -
Why counldn't we just aim the missiles and drop them within the NK seas? I am sure the reactions from China and the Soviet would not be so calm if NK fired their missiles over mainland China or Soviet.
We are not at Ground zero but it is good to see from reports that states and countries are handling this issue with a right mind. -

this is the era of the global village, and international norms must be reflected. I consider the NK regime to be guilty of genocide because of their lack of care in feeding their population due to political stunts and seclusion.
If you ask me personally, I'd say Kim has lost all legitmacy a long time ago.
