Top scientist asks sceptics to probe existence of God
LEADING scientist Francis Collins led the international Human Genome Project that mapped the 3.1 billion chemical base pairs in humanity's DNA, and is an unlikely convert from atheism to evangelical Christianity.
The 56-year-old Collins recently addressed the clash of science and religion during a conference at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
But his most complete argument for God appears in a new book, The Language Of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, which addresses two radically divergent audiences: He asks scientific sceptics to investigate God with the same open-minded zeal they apply to the natural world. And he tells fellow evangelicals that opposition to evolution undermines the credibility of faith.
But scientists are probably the tougher audience.
According to Nature, the science weekly, 'many scientists disagree strongly' with Collins-style arguments and critics feel 'more talk of religion is the last thing that science needs'.
As a medical student, Dr Collins wondered why patients who were suffering and dying retained faith in God.
He realised that as a scientist, 'you are not supposed to decide something is true until you have looked at the data. And yet I had become an atheist without ever looking at the evidence whether God exists or not'. -

This thread is deviating far away from where I wanted it to be, a healthy and friendly discussion but some things will never change I guess. There is a reason why my thoughts are like that, not to brainwash or confuse anyone. I respect those who tries to back up their arguements with evidences but not to those who don't give a flying F about life and yet wants to join in on the flaming train.. Ermm.. Word out then..

In the course of history,the minority has always been condemned and ridiculed or even persecuted by the majority for not following the norm..in this case to believe in the same thing the majority believe in.Socrates tried to teach people to question what they believe..he was forced to consume poison.in reference to galileo and copernicus,they too were in danger when they believe that the earth moves around the sun and not the sun moves around the earth.

many people tend to think of science as purely formed by lab, beaker, tube and steamming liquid and an old professor...
they ignore the rationality that become the backbone of our modern science for these centuries, scientists are skeptical about everything on earth, and there were some scientists tried to prove GOD DO exist but they failed, therefore, scientists CAN NOT prove if GOD exists, and it DOES NOT mean GOD exists, scientists just DO NOT know about this issue (so now you understand the logic of science?). on the other hand, have any priests tried to prove GOD DO NOT exist for the sake of searching the true knowledge rather than only reading ancient scrolls? Well, by reading The Bible, most of the priests claim GOD DOES exist (and again, you have understood how church works?)
anyway, science rules, and let the religion to be the side dish, i have no opinion about this... -
The thing is, faith cannot be approached with science.
To approach faith with science, and apply scientific principles to prove or disprove something, can only happen when there is a pinnacle, an ultimate apex in scientific achievement.
Isn't it true just several centuries ago, people thought the earth was flat based on their science at that time? What if they use this scientific principle to prove or disprove something on a matter related to faith?
I see a lot of arrogance in any field where there are 'experts' in it. They think they know everything.
I don't think something like whether God exists or not, or other such big questions, can be proved or disproved by science.
It is obvious.
Therefore if somebody says that God doesn't exist because scientifically so, or mention some logical or philosophical argument, you can immediately tell that that person is really a pretentious arrogant ignorant, who actually doesn't really know what he's talking about. -
