actually i use a binocular and sometimes i see laptops with office people inside talking urgently on the phone...they could be trying to get access to my wireless as well to send urgent emails.

I guess hiding would be the best choice, since they don't know, and would be hard to guess.
But then again, war driving pros can easily detect anything they want, because routers are set to "reply" if they receive anything "calling" them. -

The signal from my router is so weak, I don't even bother to use it.

For basic encryption, I think the default one will do. But there's indeed alot of free tools to use online.
