When a country becomes home

I met an Israelite at work many years ago.
I remembered our discussion at the Starbucks at Liat Towers in Orchard Road. After discussing about networks and servers, we started chatting about other things. He told me he was returning to Israel that weekend. Incidentally, that was just a week after a bomb exploded in a cafe, right where he stays.
Naturally I asked why he wants to return to Israel now? Why not later, when it is more peaceful? His answer was simple. I remembered what he said. "Israelites don't fear. When Israelites need to return to Israel, they return whether the country is safe or not because if we don't, we are scared and when we are scared, that's when we have lost."
So what turns your country into your home? Why the difference? And is the difference important? -
They came a long way....
During their war for independence... Fresh isrealites new migrants whom they are probably migrants to oversea for many generation ago, First day step onto the shores of Isreal arms themselves and head to the battlefield... That's how deep they feel for the people and country. They have the strongest cohesive race I believe to all other nations. -

You are right. Your country is printed on your passport. But have you truly found home?

Maybe sometimes it does help to have some unstable situation in your birthland before you have a strong sense of nationlism and found the place where you belong.

There were once places I genuinely loved. Whenever i needed to find solace, i retreat to the National Library, find my favourite spot at the corridor and read a book. The red bricks meant a lot to me, it was here I borrowed my first book and met my first love. The national library is unfortunately gone.
I also loved the open air coffee shop at Little Road, my frens and I enjoyed beer there for years. Its gone, made way for upgrading.
I guess its these little things that we relate to, no matter how far we are, we just want to come back to the same things that reminds us that we are home. Unfortunately when these things are gone, the feelings associated with them begins to fade too. When feelings are gone, everything is gone. -
