She didn't follow family's advice - and got killed
JOHOR BARU - A PART-TIME student who went against her family's advice not to walk to her workplace has been found dead by the roadside not far from her home in what police suspect is a case of murder.
Miss Chang Shu Chen (right), 18, who worked as a salesgirl at a shopping mall here, was found lying motionless along Jalan Persisiran Perling 1 at 11.28am on Friday.
She was last seen leaving her home at 10.15am.
Her brother Chang Wee Tat, 21, said her handbag, which contained an umbrella and a water bottle, was missing. But her other belongings, including cash, cellphone, ATM cards and keys, were found in her pockets.
He said his sister had been working at a music store at the mall for about six months and usually took the bus to work.
'But sometimes, when she did not want to wait for the bus, she would walk. I have told her countless times not to walk to work. I felt it was not safe. But she did not listen,' he said.
Assistant Commissioner Roslan Ahmad said police would investigate the case as murder. He said the cause of death could not be ascertained as a post-mortem had yet to be carried out.
The victim had no external injuries except for a bleeding nose and bruises on the left ankle and left knee.
The incident took place as Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi ordered the police to step up patrols to make the country safer.
'We have to increase the number of police stations and personnel. The order has been given out to increase the number of police personnel,' he said while on a visit to Kuantan on Friday.
For a start, he announced that a new police training college would be built so that the number of recruits could be increased.
But he cautioned Malaysians that they, too, would have to play a part.
'Do not just look and do nothing. We have to tackle this problem together,' he said. -- New Straits Times, The Star/Asia News Network
