Cargo train overturns near Lower Delta Rd, train services disrupted
SINGAPORE : Train services between Singapore and Malaysia have been disrupted after a cargo train overturned near Lower Delta Road on Monday afternoon, blocking railway transportation lines between the two countries.
It was around 5.40 pm when workers in the factories near Lower Delta Road heard a loud bang.
Six carriages were dislodged from the main train and had overturned.
It is believed the train had come from Malaysia and was headed to Tanjong Pagar Railway Station.
An eyewitness, Ng Hee Thong, said, "We heard a loud sound then we went out and saw a lot of smoke."
Railway workers say the train was carrying sugar.
There were no injuries.
By 8pm, more than 10 Malaysian railway workers had arrived to assess the damage.
Workers Channel NewsAsia spoke to say they are not sure how the wreckage is going to be cleared, and it is going to be difficult since there are no roads leading to the railway track and furthermore, the area is surrounded by thick undergrowth.
The railway track is managed by Malaysia and the workers say they are awaiting instructions from the Malaysian authorities.
According to KTMB Singapore, about 500 passengers had their travel plans disrupted.
Walk-in passengers who tried to buy tickets off the counter were also turned away.
Three trains - Mel 64, Express Timuran and Senandung Malam - had their schedules cancelled.
Officials say trains are not expected to be up and running so soon.
Many of the passengers who arrived at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station were not told that a train had derailed.
Except for a white board with brief information, there was hardly any assistance rendered to the affected passengers, and neither was there any public announcements.
One passenger said, "I plan to go by taxi to Johor Bahru and from there I (will) take the train to Kuala Lumpur. The train is 11 o'clock. They didn't pay anything for us. We have to go there with our own money by taxi."
Another passenger commented, "I have to go Kuala Lumpur....(that is) very important. All bookings (have already been made) to Kuantan, Langkawi, Penang. Then I (have to) go to my country New Zealand."
A third passenger added, "They just told me that the train is postponed but they say they will work 24 hours to fix it. I hope tomorrow the train will be up and running as usual. - CNA/ms -

So does singapore still have the right to exercise sovereignty over it?
Is the land sovereign Malaysian land or Sovereign Singapore land belonging to RTM?
How come the derailment have to be investigated by Malaysian Police in Singapore.

Train services between Singapore and Malaysia back on track
KTM train services between Singapore and Malaysia are back on track.
Services were disrupted on Monday evening after a cargo train carrying sugar derailed in Singapore in the Lower Delta Road area.
Normal services resumed just before 8 pm on Tuesday.
About 50 workers worked non-stop overnight and over most of Tuesday to repair the damage.
Sacks of sugar, which had been in the cargo containers that toppled, were taken away.
An official at the site told Channel NewsAsia that the immediate priority was to get the track operational.
It was a major repair process.
Workers had to manually re-lay the tracks along a 50-metre stretch.
After that, a ballast regulator and tamping machine had to stabilise the soil to ensure that the area was safe for trains to go on.
It was estimated more than a thousand passengers were affected by the accident.
A statement from KTM Berhad, which operates the train system, says most passengers were picked up and dropped off at Woodlands instead, during the course of the disruption.
Meanwhile, coach services saw increased business as a result with major bus operators like NICE Coach Services seeing a spike of about 20 percent in demand from Tuesday afternoon. - CNA/ch -
