Depends on alot of variables (if 1 answer fits all then everyone will have successful business already)... like your budget, if no budget make sure you have a good biz plan, to roll in investors.
Then you gotta consider location if you're opening shop, if location not important then read on... If location important, need to figure the market size of the customers living around the area, or if your product is something that people will travel from changi to jurong to buy...
Then you also consider supply and demand, this is important because for example during the gold rush, people digging for gold (supposedly worth more) but when logic of supply and demand kicks in, everyone wants to dig for gold, so the guy who sell shovels earn the most, the people who digs for gold are the losers.
Then you have to consider your unique selling point/skill/talent, what can you offer that is different from competitors. How are you going to market them? You need detailed strategies, not just simply say, I'm going to do Internet Marketing and make my company most well known in the world, you need step by step planning how to achieve it.
There are many more that people write books about when it comes to business, so if you want good answers, read up and read alot. What I mentioned are probably 0.000000001% of possible advice.
