Another possible reason is that many of the original Indians that came to Singapore during Colonial times came from a place in India called Kling.
So a fella from kling might be called that ba. -

yah that's the one i heard as well. Imaginative. Heard it refers to our colonial past, when Indian prisoners were brought to Singapore by the British for construction purposes.
