I only see woman and woman do that. They shake hand and then touch the heart. NOt sure about man. -
I see it as a sign of respect, acknowledgement, humilty and friendship.
You dont have to be so hardcore put ur hand on ur heart after shake. Just somewhere around there can ready. haha
I do that to my friends too even tough im not malay.

We do so as a sign of respect for each other.
And yeah, we don't shake hands with members of the opposite sex for the sake of modesty, except in the case of close relatives. The younger ones will kiss the hand of people from the older generation. Heck, I always kiss my mother's hand when I'm leaving for school.
My JC's head of discipline frowned on us Malay students for shaking hands with each other, saying that it was prejudicial to the secular environment of the school. I say that's hogwash - I don't see what's his frickin' problem with us showing respect for each other.

I asked my malay friends before..
he said... since you shake the person's hand.. that person is offering you he/her friendship, respect to you.
You shaking hand is accepting it.. and putting your hand towards the heart later symbolises that you accept the friendship and respect and place it in your heart (sign of sincerity) -
