does Vegetarian automatically means Halal ??

my class is planning on a birthday meal.. however one of em is a vegetarian(chinese), the other is a muslim. so what shall we do? will going to a vegetarian restaurant solves the problem? suggestions please..

halal is the way u handle meat right...
so if no meat = no need for any halal rocedures right...

hahaha, why dun you just have a picnic or something on the beach? no need to waste so much money. And vegetarian meals can be bought separately for him. -

I think vegetarian food should be halal because it doesn't consist meat and even if it's cooked, the oil used is organic. So my guess is, the food is already halal? -
the point here is... THERE IS NO MEAT!!

BASIC PRINCIPLES
According to the Islamic worldview, all food and drinks can be classified under one of the following categories:
1) Halal
‘Halal’ is an Arabic word which means lawful or allowable. Any food or drink which falls under this category is permitted for consumption. Most food and drinks are considered Halal unless they are stated clearly in the Holy Quran and Hadith as forbidden or non-Halal.
2) Non-Halal
‘Non-Halal’, also traditionally known as ‘Haram’, means unlawful or unallowable. As the name implies, any food or drink which is classified as non-Halal is prohibited for consumption. In general, all harmful things are non-Halal. Examples of these include the meat of dead animals and birds, flesh of swine, intoxicating drugs and alcoholic beverages.
3) Syubhah
Any food or drink which lies within the grey area and does not fall clearly under the Halal or non-Halal category is classified as ‘Syubhah’, alternatively called questionable or dubious.
One example of a Syubhah ingredient is lecithin. Lecithin can be derived from plants or animals. It is considered Halal if the lecithin comes from plants but non-Halal should it come from pigs or animals that are not slaughtered in accordance with the Islamic law.
Until the status becomes clear, Muslims should avoid consuming Syubhah food or drinks. The Prophet (pbuh) has given a guideline concerning Syubhah matters. It is reported by Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah and Darimi, as follow:
Which means: What is Halal is clear. And what is Haram is also clear. And in between those two is a dubious area in which many people do not know about. So whoever distanced himself from it, he has acquitted himself (from blame). And those who fall into it, he has fallen into a state of Haram. -

can la...muslims can eat at vegetarian restaurants...cos they dun serve meat thus no breeching of the slaughtering law and they dun use animal oil to cook( this in laymen's term)

By right vegetarian resturants are not supposed to contain any form of animal extracts or by-products but some strict muslims won't even risk that.
According to my muslim colleague if they think that it is not halal, they can't eat it too.
It really depend on the TS muslim friend. Talk to him/her if he/she is comfortable with a vegetarian restaurant or he/she insist on a halal certified establisment -

the prob is, do they wash the veggies with other non-halal food e.g pork? if yes, it is considered as non-halal.
and as a muslim, ive never heard of #3 too

what the hell la, my friend is lacto-ova vegetarian and still eats from a stall that serves meat.But his dish has no meat and that stall uses vegetable oil

halal doesnt mean no meat leh,
if it means tat then they cant eat mutton or beef too,
which is wrong,
it means no pork lard in their food,
or the utensils used to cook the food must not contact pork/pork lard too.
If ur tat mly fren is very particular with Halal,
cause some of them must have completely porklard-free serving,
n some of them actually eat the food that are actually cooked from utensils tat have ardy contacted pork lard but wif no pork in their food.
Think u check him with 1st b4 making decision.
