  not sure if ur ever noticed,singers on stage, drummers always have smtg plugged at their ear.Is it too minimise the loud sound on stage...?Been wondering what it was...any idea?

  It depends.
  
  For some, its to hear the producer directions and be given instructions on what to do and what to expect next.
  
  For some, music will be blasted in the earpiece so that they can sing as though they are in the recording studio. Some sing well that way.

  The lyrics are played thru it so they don't forget their lyrics while singing.

  That is correct. The background music. That is why sometimes you see them wearing it when they are about to sing.
  
  If they wear it almost all the time, that means they are receiving cue from the show directors...

  That one is got the music one. Because the sound entered into microphone and project out at the speaker got delay of a few milli sec. therefore the music at the earpiece is not what you hear at the speaker.

  The music they play and the song they sing are so bad that they want to hear it themselves.
  So they listen to something else.
