There is freedom in singapore. However, some people choose to go certain places at a wrong time. Over the past few days, places other than hong lim park and parliament house oozes freedom. I can walk freely in amk, jurong and tampines without a single man/women in blue.
I wanted to tell those in hong lim park that if they wanted a stroll in the park, I could introduce other places that are more serene and scenery than there, but I was afraid that one of the ISD guys might mistake me as a supporter so I gave it a miss.
People are telling me unlawful restraint is a serious offence in the Penal Code. I quickly look to the straits times for answer and they explained that what they are doing it was not wrongful restraint but stopped from doing (further)wrong. Imagine your kid joining bad company and wanted to go out after midnight. As parents, you lock the doors and prevent them from going as you know nothing good will come out of it. Yes! government are somewhat our parents and its only right that they protect us from harm.
40 years of the PAP system can never go wrong base on the millonaire salaries. With our world class government holding world class pay, we will definitely do our best to hold this world class event.

If you value safety above freedom doesn't mean that other people does the same.
Some people value safety above freedom and some freedom above safety.
It is unfair to judge a country as better or worse based on your own value judgement.
in US especially, freedom is regarded as a basic right. -
My ex-friends was at the rally on the very first day. They told me the police try to warn them and stopped them from entering the park. They even demand to see their NRIC. My ex-friends were aghast and disappointed by the whole event that instead of being frightened, it angered them. angered them that the Police had the audacity to stop citizens from entering an open public park!
I had no choice but to explain to them that the word police came from the word 'lice'. Nobody likes lice and Nobody wants to be lice but they have to do it because they are called police. Being in the civil service sector, their job is to protect and uphold the constitution, with the responsibility of maintaining law and order (law enforcement), and protecting the general public from harm. With the chees and gang messing around, police are wasting their resources by keeping them company when a murder case is happening across the streets.
Of course the piority is not much of the murder case in this instance as the hong lim park camp warrants more danger to singapore. Luckily common sense prevail and justice is served. Singapore's security would have been badly compromised and our system would be endangered if the police were to pursue the murder suspects across the streets instead of keeping chees and gang company. -

I do agree with your analogy of parents and kids, but in this case, the parents are extremely wealthy given their huge paychecks, while the kids are starving, and the kids wanted to know why, instead of an open communication, the parents sent hooligans to barricade them from having a fair judgement. They are doing things peacefully bear in mind, they are not violent at all. If there is anyone trying to be violent, it's the poligans here, preventing them from moving around. I have some high traffic websites and blogs and when the video is posted up, people asks me why the police in singapore treat their citizens that way... I really don't know, although I am happy to be a Singaporean, but I feel sorry about what SOME people do to suppress freedom. -
