Which waterproof jacket to buy?

  Let say you have "Berghaus" and "The North Face" to choose, which would you choose let say the price is about the same.
  
  I find that Timberland is like paying for the brand..saw one at $799 which both "Berghaus" and "The North Face" cost only $450 for a similar one.

  So long it is 3ply Gore-tex with XCR... go for that.

  The sale assistants told me that "Aquafoil" which is also waterproof is good enough...but as far as i know, core-tex is waterproof. But not so sure about "Aquaproof" but it looks pretty waterproof. Too many to choose from.

  i have been using the fountainhead by northface for 2 years already...absolutely no water comes in and keeps u super dry and comfy

  When buying waterproof jacket you need to consider the following..
  
  1) waterproofness
  2) breatheability
  3) lightness..
  
  so far Gore-tex have been able to meet these requirements... that's why SAF chose this lining as their jacket but SAF's one is 2-ply gore-tex which is first generation.
  
  the current one is 3 ply with XCR.
  
  Why gore-tex is good is that its waterproofness is PERMANENT. unlike other which is just a thin lining of nylon or other aqua-phobic material. which wears out over time (think SAF field pack or Outdoor/Eastpak bags).
  
  It is breatheable so that when you sweat or perspire, it does not get retained inside. therefore you do not feel stuffy when wearing the jacket.
  
  lightness... self-explanatory.
  
  Brands like Timberland are catered more for the consumer market who sells using "catchy" hi-tech terms...
  
  you should go for outdoor brands and see what "technology" they implement within the jackets... hint: North Face, Columbia, Mammut, etc etc..
  
  even of these brands.. i feel North Face and Columbia is quite commericialised already...
