Why are people terrified and afraid of ghosts?

Why, although I admit, as like many other else, share the same fear of paranormal entities, a fear that I tried to explain to myself, but couldn't. I mean real ghosts does no harm people unlike in the movies, but why people are still scared?
By the way issit possible tat in the future, after having eliminated the fear, humans and ghosts can live together, hand in hand, in a society where death no longer seens as a physical extinction, or rather, a changing process into a higher being -
Hahaha....how you know real ghosts dont harm people? How many of them have you met?

I'm quite sure humans have killed much more humans than ghosts have killed humans.

You said it yourself, movies.
Because of movies where ghosts are made so scary.
Imagine if somebody has never ever seen any ghost movies. Never read horror books, just never have anything to do with the stereotypical picture of scary ghost.
Do you think this person will be 'scared of ghosts' ?
Or perhaps imagine someone who is into a belief that 'spiritual beings' or 'ghosts' are kind hearted and positive 'friends'. Or someone who only watch 'Casper' forming the only idea of friendly ghost. Do you think this person will be 'scared of ghosts' ? -
Why are they afraid of ghost?

Not only movies... But also because people fear the unknown.

people are generally fearful of the unknown.
as of the ghost movies, they only scare when there's sudden scene. its the usual formula of having sudden loud sound before silence. or when you expect the ghost to appear, but it never appear, and then suddenly appear! haha.. same formula technique to produce cheapo off-the-mill horror shows eversince The Ring. -
i scare of ghost because i have a guilty conscious.

Well, I think first we have no REAL grasps of the paranormal, while some who claim they are experts, still have much room to doubt their credibility on the subject of ghosts and supernaturals.
One thing common to us all; we fear what we have no knowledge of.
Secondly, ghosts has no standard physical definitions, in fact, in the world of science, they don't and cannot exist.
As portrayed in movies, the line between ghosts and Demons/Devil is blurred, leaving most of us skewed by our own assumptions. Again, there's no real definitions of a ghost.
In my own opinion, ghosts are largely more FELT then seen. Given that according to science, they lack physical volume, and as such not visible. It would perhaps be closer to thr truth, to say that ghosts are made up of pure energy taking no physical form gaseous or otherwise solid.
In this respect, a sudden sense of dread and fear in a deserted building or house, is best heeded that there is ghostly presence. You need not have to see one to say that they're there or around.
Some people are more sensitive to their presence, while some are oblivious. -

thats because the media (movies, books) make them look terrifying. if the media depicts them as friendly people we oso not tat scared.

I believe most of us are affected by the mass media, esp TV.
who continuous uses their imagination to haunt us, and line their pockets.
From the early days of ghosts being vampires, to dracula, and later now, to the ring, blair witch project is a good way to show how they evolved.
Frankly, human are afraid of the unknowns. Just like some of afraid of sharks but some are not, due to knowledge gained and our own exposure.
I bet it took a long time for alot of people to understand gravity. Something that no-one can see but affects everyone.
It also depends on what we are teaching the next generations.
Repeatedly showing them such movies, documentarties would create an unhealthy understanding.
For me, I am now terrifed with the "GHOSTS" among people that may do more harm than actual paranormal.
