Bicycle brakes

  my front wheel brakes make a very disturbing creaking noise when they are applied. how can i go about removing this noise?

  use disc brake.

  Use "green" abrasive paper to sand the brake surface, wet first.
  
  Use the more abrasive ones for brake pads.
  
  Note: NEVER use those "black" or more abrasive sandpapers on the brake surface as it will reduce brake modulation and make slowing down smoothly a pain.

  btw i vaguely rmb coming across this saying sometime back about applying coke. is it targetted at this problem, or sth else?

  For creaking...
  
  Might try tightening the bolts holding the caliper for starters.
  
  Get a proper bike tech to check, even better.

  hmm actually not really high pitch creaking nor squeaking. or rather, a lower tone noise arising from friction between the metal and the rubber.

  coke is targeted at increasing stopping power, but modulation suffers and, ants....
  
  Not to mention the brake will sqeak even more.

  orh, then use sandpaper lor, the sound might be caused by riding in the rain, sweet soft drinks dripping on brake surface and oily stuff.

  You have to go to a bicycle shop to get the brakes adjusted.
  
  The sound happens because of uneven brake.

  disc brakes or v brakes? Disc brakes squel for varied reasons, contaminated rotors or brake pads.
  
  Rotors, use detergent to clean.
  Brake pads, take them out & sand them. I just sand mine on those blocks use to sharpen knives......perfect & evenly sanded.
  
  Some pads squeal when its wet.......SHIMANO. So i opt for koolstop

  Words of advice : Better to get medium to high end v brakes or calipers rather than shite low end disk brakes like the one on my bike.
  
  Disk brakes look damn chio though.

  hahahaha. disc brake damn expensive lah.
  Maybe your brake pads too hard olready.
  My advice,
  Either change the brake pads
  or
  cycle very fast and brake hard to wear down your brake pads a lil bit, it does work for me, the sweaking dissapeared
  or (last method)
  get some greese and put on the brake pad surface (don't put alot if not arr wah, you know what will happen lah)
