  I say the Spartans....
  
  I read the book Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae, which is about 300 Spartan knights and their allies faced the massive 100,000+ forces of Xerxes, King of Persia.

  I too have read that book. The romans might have had the best military conquests but in terms of courage and honor, the spartans were the top.
  
  King Leonidas was indeed possesed of extrodinary courage and leadership. Even today , the story of the battle of thermopylae stands as a great testerment to their courage and strength.
