lost phone cannot be disabled

my friend lost his n80 last night.. and when i ttired calling the service provider (starhub), the customer care consultant told me that there is no way they can disable the phone.. but i thought someone posted in the forums that u can give them your phone's IMEI number for them to disable it..
was that consultant lying? any ideas of wad to do next? he already cancelled the phone line.
please help.. thanks

How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on
your phone:
* # 0 6 #
A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your
handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. when your phone gets
stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They
will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the
SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.
You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever
stole it can't use/sell it either.
If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile
phones.

providing the imei no. is in fact useless. lol.. So.. ya think the cops would be so free to help ya nap the theif and recover your cellphone?
when ya lost ya phone, call your svc provider immediately to temporary suspend your line. For collection of SIM card, pls go down to the respective telco shops. -
that sux that the telco wont block imei # cos it is available everywhere else to make stolen phones useless.....
