In the outside world Singapore is known as the country with canes.

Have you ever considered other methods? Why cane a person for not being ABLE to do his job? I mean, if he can't read, or can't do the math, why cane the student? Why cane the soldier if he is too anxious to jump from the plane?
Sorry, but to a forigner, canning in Singapore seems like the main solution to all problems. Can't read? Cane. Can't do the exercise? Cane. Can't stop discussing a specific issue? Cane. Child doesn't stop crying? Cane. Arrested person claims innocence? Cane to he declares himself guilty. -
Firstly, parents nowadays rarely cane their children.
In the past they do because its our culture.
Secondly, you only get caning when u commit serious crimes like rape.
Not because you refuse to jump out of a plane.

singapore isnt like that. they dont cane people for stuff like not being able to read. well, the teachers dont at least.
some parents might cane their kids because they are not happy with their results in school or something...but im sure that happens in other countries too. -
In Denmark it is illegal and if a parent is convicted of beating the child he or she is sentenced to prison, and the child is taken away from him or her.
If a teacher is found beating or caning a child, which is rare, he or she can face imprisonment and never again be able to function in the school system. -
So what makes u say that school teachers here cane students?

there are pros and cons when it comes to caning.
maybe you can compare the crime rates of denmark and singapore also.
of course, one has to take into consideration the different lifestyles and cultures as well.

i'm glad that, at least he bothered to come and ask. it's just so unfriendly of us to shoo them off for saying this, instead of inviting them to come and visit singapore and experience how we have since changed into a global city.

caning as official punishments are only for very serious convicted offences like vandalism, drug trafficking (if u escape the gallows) and rape. this has never changed all along. -

We do not get cane just because we cant read, write, exercise, etc etc.
AND NO!! The police will NEVER cane someone just to get an admittance from the suspect. CANING will only be done when you commit a SERIOUS OFFENCE and will be sentenced after court finds you guilty. Obviously the last part of your post makes me seem you do not thoroughly research about Singapore much and just hear it from word of mouth.

I repeat again. Caning is only for people who committed serious offence like murder, rape, drug trafficking etc etc.
If you are talking about parents caning their children, then tat is a different matter. Some spoil their child some are stern towards them. Its all depends on the parents and no one can tell them what to do about it.
NOTE: Abuse and caning is 2 different thing. We do not tolerate abuse from parents!

But in no way was i ever abuse by my parents. Now, as an adult... i must thank them for the beating because it set me on the correct path in life.
Please try to understand that in Asia Culture, caning a child is for his/her own good. WE still believe in the saying - Spare the rod, spoil the child - but ABUSE is a big NO NO
