Ladies and gentlemen,
I dont think it is neccessarily bad at all.
As you see, Singapore is unique.
For instance, during SARS crisis, the media was very effective.
And yes, during cartoon crisis too.
And whenever you read criminal cases, there are always warnings of possible jail terms, like this:
'Anybody found stealing can be fined $1000 or jailed for 1 year, or both'.
And public service announcements are always disseminated in the media, for instance:
'Road ABC will be closed for one week, drivers are advised to take alternate route, road BCD'.
It is good to have a media which is not 'free' , because a managed media can serve excellent benefits, for the greater good of society.
If you read other newspapers, no one is so dilligent to always warn people of the possible jail terms for criminal cases. Or to dilligently disseminate public service announcements.
Of course the difference is even wider if we compare the serious issues, like SARS or cartoon crisis, or hanging/ death sentence, politics, etc heavy issues.
I do think one of the main tenets of Singapore's progress lies in its managed media.
This is not bad.
Not bad at all.
Singapore is small and compact, and quick and efficient, and having a managed media is a leverage.
spoken like a man who chooses to be blind politically; give up freedom for convenience.
managed media? im sure it sounds better than state run media.

nothing that is run by a govt is good because it can be used as a propaganda machine, mis-present facts and figures, mislead the masses and the like.
i quote an example. when the US forces in Iraq were encircling Baghdad, ready for the final strike, our dear comedian aka ex Iraq Information Minister aka Baghdad Bob was conjuring some really funny statements that lives on until even today.
I can say, and I am responsible for what I am saying, that they have started to commit suicide under the walls of Baghdad. We will encourage them to commit more suicides quickly.
[
I told you yesterday that the shock has backfired on them. Indeed, they are shocked because of what they have seen. No one received them with roses. They were received with bombs, shoes and bullets. Now, the game has been exposed. Awe will backfire on them. This is the boa snake. We will extend it further and cut it in the appropriate way.
I would like to clarify a simple fact here: How can you lay siege to a whole country? Who is really under siege now? Baghdad cannot be besieged. Al-Nasiriyah cannot be besieged. Basra cannot be besieged.
My feelings - as usual - we will slaughter them all.
and a many more.
get my point?
