i think that the SMRT should start making barriers that will only open when the train stops. this is to prevent people from doing the same thing just to gain public attention. i agree that the family is indeed very poor thing but this is not the way to do things and government should start to educate the public that this is not the only way out. we should let the people know that this is not the way to make ur family lives better.what u guys think >?

ya...it was perhaps a design flaw for not installing barriers at mrt stations. But come to tink of it, is there any other country that has platform screen doors on overground station?

Barriers as in those underground stations? The current MRT station makes such an idea unfeasible, and furthermore barriers can only prevent accidents from happening, whereas the example you gave was not an accident. So far, the real accidents involving MRTs are minimal. Most of the recent deaths on MRT tracks are due mainly to intentional suicides. -

If the person is daring to die, there are a lots of way to do it.
Fencing the MRT station is not the solution to the social problem.
The cause of the problem is poverty.
It is still heartening that Singapore is surrounded by kind hearted soul who is willing to help some stranger in need.
It is also kind of disgusting when a Million Poodle that lives in a White Castle have come forward to steal the limelight when they should be there in the very 1st moment, NOT when the money is collected. -
Hey, how about a twist to it.
Installing barriers is not the solution to stop suicide.
But it is the solution to preventing delays caused by suicide or accidents. -
i think that it cannot solve the problem of sucide but however , can at least stop the delay and reduces 'publicity' of the sucide event. also , public will feel better if they are confident of the fact that they wont see a dead body lying on the track while at the paltform. the main thing is the publicity issue. also, children like to play on the platform will also be safer. a more 'normal' way of commiting sucide doesnt generate that much publicity i guess. and seriously , there is a need to stop of these sucide things(we dont wanna end up like japan, being first in world for sucide rate).. and that can be done through education. anyway.. how can someone as poor as that guy goes unnoticed ?

Why ask the govt to spoon-feed us again. Suiciding on the MRT track is just the same as dashing across a busy street on the road. If you want to SMRT to install barriers to the above ground MRT stations, might as well ask the LTA to put barriers on all sidewalk along the road. Danger is something that we should avoid ourselves on our part, not push all responsibility to some governing body for us to complain to.

As a transport operator, It is SMRT's responsibility to make sure their trains travel on time. If installing barriers can reduce the chance of any delays. I say Jolly well install it.
Afterall, raise all the fares for wad? to make sure they have enough to pay for their fines?
when one jumps into the track, the track is closed therefore resulting in a delay.
when one dashes across the road, the road does not close. -

Actually I think it's more important to help those ppl who are suicidal than to put barriers... Put barriers only will solve the problem of delay in MRT, but if ppl really wanna suicide, they can do it anywhere... So many tall buildings in sg... So maybe SMRT set up some kind of helpline with their extra profit is better..?

I dont know, I dont think it is efficient to do that.
It is like overreaction due to a shocking event.
How to say, like a motorist taking a special jacket and special helmet because he was in an accident before. Actually just a helmet will do.
This is similar perhaps.
Actually people can suicide through many ways. You create MRT barriers, they will just jump off buildings.
I think it's not efficient to make that. -
Taipei's underground stations don't even have glass doors lor. Heh.
Install those barriers will only mean one thing, increased fares. Anyway if people want to die, there will always be ways of doing it. Maybe more creative ones.
Nowadays suicide is becoming more attention-seeking and sensational. Jump down from building, only a small number of neighbours will know and lives still go on. Jump at mrt affects thousands of commuters. So you decide bah. -

Can install more emergency train stop thing on platform or better still on the train itself. Long time never hear about suicide from buildings already.
