I think I have finally discovered the answer to this great mystery. It is in my opinion that what these people have experienced is the trauma of biological birth that has resided in the dark, near-forgotten depths of their subconscious mind, only to be set free and relived again in times of stress or trouble. The dark passage that people claim to be moving through may be in fact the birth canal that links the womb to the outside world, and the figures of dead relatives or friends are actually the first people we see when we are born, or when we first open our eyes, while that bright light at the end of the tunnel can be said to be the entrance to the real world when we are born.
The birth process is very rarely remembered, only to surface from our subconscious during times like this or just moments before our deaths. It is only then that the boundaries are lifted and the restrictions vanish, allowing the darkest portions of the human psyche to emerge freely, and with it comes the memory of the process of biological birth.
Good thoughts.. Something worth to think about.. Great job! =)
