Recieved my annual reservist letter today and went to work with a heavy heart. My office is situated in central business district where talents like me are aplenty. Though reservist is very important for my family and I, it came to a point that I don't really have the time to serve it.
It was during one of those toilet breaks when I realised how wrong am I. Joe shiamnscosft has been in singapore for a good 10 years now and we had become good buddy over the years. He was a product from our excellent education system whereby he got a scholarship and after which stay, work here and became a PR.
During the time he was here, he realised how great the systems work in singapore. He was a fan of our elites who keep sprouting out new ideas and run the country like a business and citizens as workers due to our lack of resources. Like any good business, security is very important hence the need for NS and reservists to protect the country so that we can attract more elite like my friend.
Indeed, when I looked around my company, people from india, china, korea, taiwan, malaysia talents are all here. Singaporeans are a rare sight. I feel like I am in oversea posting whenever I am in the office. Luckily, it feels at home when I went over to the hawker centre where thankfully the cleaners and hawkers is still 99% singaporean.
Though Joe shiamnscosft had been here for years, he is still renting a place as he just bought a 772sq metre 3 storey house back home. He was inspired by SM Goh that we should strive for swiss standard of living for ourselves. Many elder singaporeans are still working pass their retirement age because of that advice. We are a first world nation with first world talents and when you have many foreign friends in your work place, you will realise the importance of reservist.
