depends on what you want...
if you are into games, desktop - reason being, desktops are typically more powerful (on apple-to-apple) basis and you can easily upgrade and change components.
Whereas if you are for surfing net or work or running a business, I would recommend a laptop. Moreover, its neater as there is less wires and of course, a laptop is mobile and coupled with wireless internet, you can enjoy convenience of surfing anywhere.
Nowadays, prices between desktop and laptop have narrowed. I own a laptop and I use it for surfing and sometimes gaming (although less than optimum).
Unless you are really into top-end stuff, I would recommend Acer / Dell / IBM for notebooks. if you have money to burn, Sony bah...nice and cool. -

i recommend a desktop, if needed, supplement with a small laptop.
